Mono No Aware (物の哀れ)

Mono No Aware (物の哀れ) is a Japanese expression used to describe the transcience of all things and the gentle, sorrowful appreciation of life that comes with the realization that this impermanence is a fundamental truth. Photography, by its very nature, is an expression of this concept. After all, a photograph is nothing more than a reminder of a moment that is forever lost in time.

This project resulted in a book released in February of 2021, which has sold out. A Collector’s Edition of the book with gelatin silver print was released on September 1, 2022.

“A Sweet melancholy in the knowledge that nothing lasts, like viewing the breathtaking colors of leaves in autumn, as they are about to fall.”
